Our Story
Our church’s story began in 1933 with the vision of Joseph Wannemacher to see a vibrant growing church in every community of Milwaukee. He sent a young upstart minister from his own congregation to South Milwaukee to begin this work. The church called themselves the South Milwaukee Gospel Tabernacle and joined the fellowship of the Assemblies of God.
With much prayer, work, and sacrifice, the church began to grow in numbers. God opened the door in 1967 for the church to move to the city of Oak Creek and build their own building. Many in the congregation volunteered to build this new church with their own hands. With the new location came a new name: Oak Creek Assembly of God.
In May of 1979, Jerry Brooks accepted the call to become the Senior Pastor of Oak Creek Assembly of God. The church family quickly outgrew the original building.
There have been several campus expansions since 1969. The first addition was in 1981 and this construction created a dedicated space for youth. Then in 1990 the Chapel was added. A larger Sanctuary was added in 2001 and then then the Elementary Preschool Wing was built in 2011. The church completed a major renovation to the Sanctuary, offices and Nursery in 2022.
Many have found Christ and have experienced life change from the ministry that has taken place through Oak Creek Assembly of God. Through the years, the church has been able to minister to the community with outreaches and special productions. It has also been used to share the Gospel with people globally through expansive missions efforts.
Becoming Discover Church
In November of 2022, Oak Creek Assembly of God became Discover Church. This new name will allow us to open our doors wider to those seeking spiritual truth and will bring us closer to opening up new ministry campuses in nearby communities. All of our theological foundations remain the same and we will always be part of the Assemblies of God. The best is yet to come!
Our Four Core Beliefs
The following are four of the core beliefs of Discover Church based on the 16 fundamental truths held by the Assemblies of God. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical truths.
1. The Bible is the Word of God
God's Word is the only completely reliable and truthful authority and we accept the Bible as our manual for living. Our first question when faced with a decision is, "What does the Bible say?" We practice daily bible reading and Bible study. The Bible is the basis for all we believe.
2 Timothy 3:16 // 1 Thessalonians 2:13
2. Jesus is the Son of God
Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, lived a sinless life on earth and voluntarily paid for our sin by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplished salvation for all who receive grace by trusting in Him alone. He rose from the dead and is the only mediator between God and us. He baptizes believers in the Holy Spirit and will return to earth.
John 14:6
3. You Must Be Born Again
God created humans to have fellowship with Him, but they defied God by sinfully going their own way. As a result, we need God's saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God's grace - not human effort - and must be received personally by repentance and faith. In the end, everyone will experience bodily resurrection and final judgment. Only believers will enjoy eternal fellowship with God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 // Matthew 16:25
4. Baptism in the Holy Spirit is Available to All Believers
Jesus promised His followers they would receive power from on high so that they would be His witnesses. We believe this truth is just as relevant today (Acts 1:4-5). Every believer can be filled with the Holy Spirit by asking God and living for Him.
Acts 1:8 // Ephesians 5:18
