General Overview of the Position
Responsible for performing skilled park and forestry maintenance and improvement functions.
Examples of Essential Duties
Performs or assists in the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf on all city greenspaces including providing direction to crew members to complete the tasks safely and efficiently
Conducts non-forestry park maintenance activities including but not limited to bathroom cleaning, garbage pickup, mowing operations and snow/ice removal.
Conducts periodic surveys to determine pest control, planting, removal and maintenance needs.
Operates specialized power and hand equipment.
Records all related work activity for street trees and trees on municipal property.
Purchases supplies as required, under the direction of the Supervisor.
Cooperates with park employees and responds to emergencies or unusual circumstances as required or assigned.
Communicates, coordinates and schedules forestry related volunteer projects on City property.
Maintains accurate daily records including a digital tree inventory.
Develops, drafts, presents, justifies for park municipal officials, new and revised municipal ordinances concerned with areas supervised.
Submits Tree City USA and Bird City Wisconsin applications, plans and implements annual Arbor Day Celebration.
Implements the City’s Urban Forestry Management Plan.
Provides professional advice to Supervisor in the planning, organizing and directing the various functions of the Department including budget issues.
Assists in leading full time staff and seasonal helpers in performance of duties.
Performs other duties as may be related or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma, or equivalent GED.
Valid Commercial Drivers License (BCD).
Minimum four years experience in horticulture, arboriculture, or general landscaping.
Pesticide Certification
ISA Certified Arborist
Two years of school at a technical college or university related to horticulture or arboriculture is preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
Ability to identify tree species common in Wisconsin.
Ability to identify and diagnose common tree diseases and insects.
Knowledge of computer use for data entry and spread sheets.
Ability to organize, coach and motivate work crews.
Knowledge of all applicable safety regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively, courteously and tactfully with staff, city officials and the public.
Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions and working out of doors and inside structures.
Ability to be available for emergencies that necessitate working at any time outside of normal work hours, and willingness to attend special classes outside of normal work hours.
