Description
Waukesha County's DPW-Hwy Operations is seeking Class A CDL drivers with recent work experience in the maintenance and repair of highways, roads, bridges, and right-of-ways.
A Patrol Worker may be called upon at anytime to respond to emergency situations such as: snowstorms, windstorms, flooding, traffic accidents, fires, and must have the ability to:
perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods under variable weather conditions;
operate a variety of trucks and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of roads and right-of-ways; and,
establish and maintain effective working and public relations with co-workers, the public, vendors and outside agencies.
Work Schedule:
Summer Hours - 0600 to 1600 (consisting of four (4) ten (10) hour days)
Winter Hours - 0700 to 1500 (consisting of five (5), eight (8) hour days, M-F)

The 2022 starting hourly rate range is $23.27 to $27.03 (dependent upon qualifications; full range extends to $30.78) coupled with a comprehensive compensation and benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, generous paid time off, participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System, amongst many other benefits, employees are recognized and valued through a pay for performance system. Prior to hiring, the final candidate is required to pass work/education/certification reference(s), a criminal background and driver's license check, and a Physical Exam consisting of a hearing test, physical, DOT Drug Test, musculoskeletal evaluation, and TB Assessment.
Example of Duties
Patrols highways and roads; and removes debris and obstructions.
Inspects highways and roads for defects and for failures to pavement, guardrail fencing, signing, shoulders, culverts, catch basins, erosion of right of ways, and repair or replacement of highway defects.
Performs vegetation maintenance work which may include: brush cutting, mowing, tree removal and trimming, and spraying.
Erects and repairs bridge railings, guardrails, fencing, markers, and crash barrels.
Operates equipment for snow removal, and de-icing under adverse weather conditions.
Establish work zones for traffic control, establish, and re-establish pavement markings per the Standards of the Manuals of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Inspects, maintains, and operates daily assigned equipment for construction projects, mowing, grading, tree removal, painting, and vehicles to ensure continued safe and efficient operation.
May be called upon at anytime to respond to emergency situations such as: snowstorms, windstorms, flooding, traffic accidents, fires.
Establishes and maintains effective working and public relations with co workers, the public, vendors, and outside agencies.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge of the modern practices, procedures, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of roads, highways, and right-of-ways.
Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
Working knowledge of the federal and state Manuals of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Some knowledge of computerized department software and internet access database programs.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods under variable weather conditions.
Ability to operate a variety of trucks and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of roads and right-of-ways.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working and public relations with co-workers, the public, vendors and outside agencies.
Ability to respond at anytime to emergency situations such as: snowstorms, windstorms, flooding, traffic accidents, and fires.
You must meet these minimum Training and Experience requirements:
High school graduation or GED equivalent.
Work experience in maintenance and repair of roads and the operation of a variety of trucks and equipment is desirable.
Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire. (Refer to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Training Provider Registry at https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov for information on obtaining a Class A CDL.)
Class A CDL highly preferred upon hire.
